Job Summary and key responsibilities
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Payroll Advisor to support our payroll team for 3,300 employees across multiple locations. You will play a key role in ensuring accurate and compliant payroll processing, providing guidance to junior payroll staff and supporting process improvements within the payroll function.
Key Responsibilities:
Accurate and timely processing of multiple monthly payrolls, ensuring compliance with HMRC legislation, company policies and payroll controls.
Act as a senior point of contact and subject matter expert for complex payroll queries, escalations, legislation and employee pay matters.
Working with the Group Payroll Manager and HR Data team to support the management and integration of payrolls following business acquisitions, including; process harmonisation, employee set up and onboarding and data validation.
Liaise with the outsourced payroll provider to ensure timely and accurate updates for employee changes, including new starters, leavers, benefits and salary adjustments.
Support with, in month national minimum wage analysis to ensure full compliance in line with HMRC guidelines.
Act as a subject matter expert on payroll legislation, payrolled benefits, pension schemes and statutory payments (Tax, NI, SSP, SMP, etc.).
Provide mentorship and oversight to junior payroll staff, assisting with training and development.
Collaborate closely with HR, Finance and external stakeholders to ensure data integrity and alignment.
Assist in reviewing and improving payroll processes, systems and controls to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
Understanding of company commission scheme’s, to support employees with understanding of calculations and any queries raised.
Support payroll reconciliations and month-end/year-end reporting activities.
What are we looking for:
Significant senior-level payroll experience, ideally gained within a complex, multi-site or multi-company organisation.
Minimum 5 years' payroll experience, with substantial experience operating at a senior, supervisory or subject matter expert level.
Proven experience managing payroll for large organisations of 3,000+ employees, with the ability to manage high-volume and complex payroll environments.
Strong and up-to-date knowledge of UK payroll legislation, including PAYE, national insurance, tax codes, statutory payments, national minimum wage/national living wage and other relevant legislation.
Proficient Microsoft excel, including VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, PivotTables, data analysis and reconciliation techniques.
Experience supporting or leading payroll projects; including acquisitions, system implementations, process improvements and legislative changes
CIPP qualification desirable but not essential
Excellent attention to detail, numerical accuracy, analytical and problem-solving skills.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the confidence to provide expert payroll advice and challenge stakeholders and providers where appropriate.
Highly organised, proactive, and able to manage multiple payroll deadlines and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
